    Empowerment

Does the apostrophe cause you to lose your nerve? Never again with this handy reference ! At last I feel I can take control of this grammatical black spot.

    Paris

Over exposed and a different view

Amazing city. And that metro system puts the London underground to shame. Trips on the Paris Metro of the same duration as what I take in London felt much shorter. This is due to the noise on the tube. The tube screeches and squeals through the heat whereas the trains I used in Paris ran on tyres, and the effect is a smooth quiet ride. The Metro felt much cleaner, everything on the tube is coated with a layer of carcinogenic brake dust. Combined with the heat, no wonder my stress level on the tube is so high.

This is the space ship Cygnus from the Disney film ” The Black Hole “. I think that a designer might have been inspired whilst in Paris?

    Small steps complete the journey

At the moment I’m trying to spend half an hour a day on the site sorting out design issues. I think it’s a good idea not to be too ambitious. It is just a matter of how long I will be able to keep it up, and if I’ll get all the necessary changes made within that time. Today I fixed a HTML validation issue. Not that the site validates (due to system generated URLs), but I removed an issue with divs (easily fixed – I forgot that I had to use divs with unique ids). Then I added the ‘star link’ over on the right there. A quick, randomly generated link. Making that the basis of the links page is the mission for the next spare half hour.

    Paris when it sizzles?

Off to Paris tomorrow. I haven’t been there before and I’m looking forward to it, as long as we can avoid death by heat wave I guess. The ‘sights’ I can think of off the top of my head that I really want to see are:

    1. The Eiffel Tower
    2. Arc du Triomphe
    3. The Louvre
    4. Notre Dame

My friend (also called Ben) is living in Paris and I’m sure will make an excellent tour guide….

Yeah! I just found out that our hotel is next to the freaking Eiffel Tower! I guess that takes care of number one.

    SaveMeOptions

Talk about being a dick. When I was scrambling to get the new design up on Saturday (I’d been sitting on it for months) I was having trouble saving documents (Notes/Domino people probably know where this is going). I was stumped. It turned out after what seemed like hours that I had a ‘SaveOptions’ field that was doing what it was told, in this case, don’t save the documents. The field was in a subform and was on almost every form I was testing. Great for all my $$ViewTemplates but not so good on blogs and the like. I couldn’t believe how obvious the problem was. I only figured it out after comparing a form that was working with one that wasn’t…. I guess that I’m getting a little rusty.

Hey Lotus – how about a ‘SaveMeFromBeingADumbArse’ field in 6.5?

Listening to The Throwing Muses. They take the edge off.
