Nasty Telecom…..
sup
Telecom NZ enjoyed being one of the most hated companies in the land for many years. With attitudes like this I’m sure they still hold the title…

Sasser blues

Another virus… go to MS, download the patch, install the patch, I guess this means that I’ll have to reboot, yes, it does:
Before you install this update, we recommend that you:
– Update your system repair disk (that fills me with confidence)
– Back up your system (stuff that)
– Close all open programsSo I have to shut down Putty which is running a MySQL session, Dreamweaver, Apache, Notes, several instances of Firefox with stuff in them I had found and wanted to look at later…. This is a drag.
And yes, I do decide to back-up my stuff (which takes ages) so hours later the patch is in place, and the firewall and virus checker updated.

Reality bites
sup
update: 05 May – These have been taken off the server so the link won’t work…. it’s too bad because I think people need to see the type of shots that were there.
These are pics from Iraq – some are pretty graphic . It makes you sick really.

Moving a MySQL database
sup
I’ve been shifting some PHP stuff from my laptop to a server the last couple of days and the time came to move the MySQL database to the server too. I haven’t actually done it yet, and it will be interesting to see if it works or not. I found information in an unlikely place – the Adobe support site:
http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devsup.nsf/docs/52353.htm
More interesting, I thought, was that URL. Am I going off Domino? Nope – still something there….

Give us plenty, give us peace
sup
For some reason I found myself reading the US national anthem (and singing it!). The lyrics are quite powerful, and revolve largely around the flag. The anthem is also something of a charter, something that people look to for direction on their national character (land of the free, home of the brave, etc).
The NZ anthem, that I guess most kiwis only know the first verse of, also contains some stirring lines and could also act as a point of reference for national character.
The little known third verse states – “Peace, not war, shall be our boast,” and “Let our cause be just and right, God defend New Zealand.”
Other gems include “Give us plenty, give us peace”; “Preaching love and truth to man”; and:
“May our mountains ever be
Freedom’s ramparts on the sea”. -
Mystic River and the Friedmans
sup
Capturing the Friedmans
A documentary about a family coping after two of its members are accused and incarcerated for child abuse. Definitely worth seeing. I had nightmares about Marty Friedman after seeing this.Mystic River
Mystic River has a brutal and disturbing message. I was shocked and angry when I left the movie theater. I was expecting a Clint Eastwood number more along the line of Unforgiven. I calmed down and Tash told me what she thought. I have a different point of view now, but I think I need to see it again to take it all in. Despite this – see this film. You may not like it but if you ‘go for the ride’ you may experience quite a trip.Interesting post on the Internet Movie Database claiming the film is ‘leftist propaganda’. I actually thought that it was ultra right-wing, law of the jungle propaganda at first, but Eastwood doesn’t strike me as being that way inclined.
I do not recommend watching these two back to back. Too full on.

Naming divs
sup
I didn’t know about naming rules/illegal characters for div/spans – they can’t start with a number – it has to be letter. Apart from that they can include letters, numbers, -, _, : and fullstops.
Also, and this is pretty cool, the id attribute acts as an anchor – so there’s no need to specify an “a name=”, you can just reference the id (which of course is unique).
Form the horse’s mouth:
ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ( A-Za-z ) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ( 0-9 ), hyphens (“-“), underscores (“_”), colons (“:”), and periods (“.”).
