Google does not accept my criticism…

Someone mentioned that Google Sites may be unreliable. So of course I googled it, and to my amusement this is what I got:

You searched for 'google sites' unreliable. Did you mean 'google sites' reliable?

Happily, there was very little on Google (or Yahoo search) to suggest that Google Sites are unreliable.

Ubuntu Karmic Koala says “no worries mate”

At the weekend I installed Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10). My overall impression so far is positive: Karmic Koala continues the tradition set by Ubuntu releases of incremental improvement; it is evolutionary not revolutionary.

Most importantly it just works, with the exception of one issue I am having with resuming after the laptop has been suspended, but I will get to the bottom of that.

There are a number of reviews that list the main features, there’s a good summary at Ars and another on The Register.

Despite some reports of problems with the upgrade, I had no issues at all.

I’m not sure what to make of commentators comparing Ubuntu 9.10 to Windows 7, but I guess comparisons are inevitable as long as tech-writers have column inches to fill.

Some folks say that the look of the desktop in Karmic is cleaner and crisper. That’s true to an extent but to me it feels a little Mac-esque, although only a little – it is by no means aping the OSX look.

My verdict on Karmic after nearly a week is positive, and if you’ve never tried Linux download a live disk and give it go.

The Wire

The Wire is a US TV show and I love it. I stayed up late last night to watch the final episode of the final season. Good stuff. I recommend it unless you don’t like violence, sex, depictions of drug use and fruity language. Nothing is glamorised, and it feels real in many ways. It would be easy to call this a ‘cop show’, but it is so much more than that. I found the first season very hard to get into but once it clicked I was hooked. Highly recommended.

Ode to WordPress

Upgrading WordPress to 2.8.5 was unbelievably fast. I use the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin and after clicking the “automatic update” link the site was upgraded in the time it took to reload the page. It seems too good to be true.

WordPress is a great system from my point of view – I’ve always found it reasonably easy to theme, it has a beautiful user interface, and does just what I need it to do which is allow me to talk shite.
